Originally I am from Russia. Big part of my life I lived in St. Petersburg, city rich with museums, historical monuments and cathedrals. I think I started to truly appreciate art after my visits to The Hermitage, The Russian National Museum, and many other well-known museums. I paint portraits and other representational subject matter. The style of my paintings can vary from traditional realism to photorealism depending on subject. Unlike most photorealistic artists I prefer to paint in oils using traditional brushes, rather then airbrush. I think that painting with brushes is more direct contact between my hand and a canvas, which allows me to apply more of my energy and emotions into my work. I tend to employ a hidden narrative in my artwork without making it obvious to a viewer. My characters in paintings do not just appear and stare at viewers; instead they are engaged in playing, sleeping, laughing, talking, and living that special moment many times over. They are busy luring viewers who become curious voyeurs. It is important for me to capture expressions and emotions in a single moment out of someone's life. In order to drive people's attention and make the images of my paintings stay in their minds I use luscious colors, carefully chosen subject and large scale of my paintings. My hope is that viewers will be able to shut off the world around them and enter a different world behind the canvas, a "perfect world" that viewers created themselves by looking at my paintings. |
